Services include property assessment, soil testing, custom food plot design, no-till and conventional planting, tillage, fertilizer application, and seasonal maintenance. The company specializes in designing food plots that attract whitetail deer, improve herd health, and increase hunting success for Michigan landowners.

Food Plots That Actually Work

Anybody can throw seed on the ground. Getting deer to show up consistently takes more than that. It takes understanding your soil, your property layout, your local deer patterns, and which seed blends actually produce in Michigan's climate. That's what we do — we build food plots that perform, not patches of clover that look good on Instagram and get ignored by deer.

Every property is different, so every food plot plan starts with a soil test and a walkthrough. We look at sun exposure, drainage, access points, prevailing wind, and where deer are already moving on your land. Then we design a plot layout that works with those natural patterns instead of against them. Whether you want a kill plot for bow season, a destination plot to hold deer through winter, or a network of smaller plots to manage movement across your property, we'll put together a plan that makes sense.

We handle everything from clearing the plot area to the final seed-to-soil contact. That means forestry mulching to open the canopy, tillage or no-till planting depending on your soil conditions, lime and fertilizer application based on your soil test results, and the right seed blends for the season and your goals. You don't need to rent equipment, buy seed you're not sure about, or spend weekends guessing. We take care of it.

Designing Food Plots That Hold Deer

A food plot that actually holds deer on your property isn't just about throwing seed on the ground — it's about where you put the plot, how big it is, what shape it takes, and how it fits into the way deer already move through your land. We've designed plots across Oceana, Newaygo, Mason, and Lake counties, and every property teaches you something different about what works and what doesn't.

Size matters more than most people think. A plot that's too small gets wiped out overnight by a herd, and deer stop visiting because there's nothing left to eat. We recommend a minimum of a quarter acre for kill plots near stand locations, and ideally one to two acres for destination feeding plots. Shape matters too — irregular edges with screening cover along the borders make deer feel safe entering during daylight hours. A long, narrow plot along a travel corridor will get more daytime use than a wide-open circle in the middle of a field.

Location is everything. We look at existing travel corridors, bedding areas, water sources, and prevailing wind directions. The best food plots sit between bedding and feeding areas along natural travel routes, and they're positioned so you can hunt them without blowing deer out. Wind is the one thing you can't fix after the plot is planted, so we think about stand access and wind direction from day one.

Soil Testing and Preparation

Most Michigan soil — especially the sandy loams common across West Michigan — is naturally acidic, often running a pH of 5.0-5.5. Most food plot plants perform best at a pH of 6.0-7.0. Without a soil test, you're guessing on lime rates, and under-liming is the number one reason food plots fail in Michigan. We pull samples from every plot location and send them to a lab so we know exactly what your ground needs.

Based on the results, we build a soil amendment plan: how much lime per acre to correct pH, what fertilizer blend to apply, and what nutrients are missing. Getting the soil right before you plant is the difference between a lush plot that holds deer all season and a patchy mess that barely germinates. A $15 soil test saves hundreds in wasted seed. We handle the sampling, the lab submission, and the interpretation — you just get the plan and the results.

Seed Selection for Michigan Food Plots

What you plant depends on when you want to attract deer and what your soil can support. For year-round plots with minimal maintenance, perennial clover blends — especially white clover and chicory mixes — are hard to beat. They establish fast in Michigan's climate, tolerate sandy soils, and provide high-protein forage from spring through fall. Once established, a good clover stand lasts three to five years with just annual mowing and a light fertilizer application.

For fall hunting attraction, brassicas are king. Turnips, radishes, and rape varieties produce tons of forage and become increasingly palatable after the first hard frost. Deer hammer brassica plots from November through January in West Michigan. Cereal grains like winter rye and oats provide late-season forage that stays green well into winter, giving deer a food source when everything else has died back.

Soybeans and corn produce high-calorie, high-protein forage during summer and fall, but they require larger plot sizes to survive deer browsing pressure. On smaller properties, we usually steer clients toward clover and brassica blends that produce well even in half-acre plots. We'll help you pick the right seed for your specific property, soil type, and hunting goals.

No-Till vs. Conventional Planting

No-till planting means putting seed directly into the ground without turning the soil. We spray or mow existing vegetation, then use a no-till drill or broadcast seeder to get seed into the soil surface. No-till works well for established clearings, plots that just need overseeding, and erosion-prone slopes where you don't want to disturb the soil structure. It's also faster and cheaper than conventional tillage for the right situations.

Conventional planting involves discing or tilling the soil to create a clean seedbed before planting. This is the better approach for brand-new plots carved out of wooded areas, heavy clay soils that need to be broken up, and situations where you're doing major soil amendment work with lime and fertilizer that needs to be incorporated into the ground. The extra prep work results in better seed-to-soil contact and higher germination rates.

We offer both methods and we'll tell you which one makes sense for your property. A lot of our food plot clients in West Michigan use a combination — no-till on established plots that just need freshening up, and conventional tillage on new plots we're building from scratch.

Our Process

Property Assessment

We walk your property to understand the terrain, timber, water sources, and current deer activity. We look at where deer are bedding, feeding, and traveling.

Soil Testing & Design

We pull soil samples from your plot locations and send them to a lab. Based on the results, we design a planting plan with the right seed blends, lime rates, and fertilizer for your ground.

Site Prep & Planting

We clear the plot area if needed, apply lime and fertilizer, and plant using no-till or conventional methods. Seed-to-soil contact is the goal — we don't just broadcast and hope.

Follow-Up & Maintenance

We can return for seasonal mowing, overseeding, or replanting. Many landowners set up spring and fall planting schedules with us to keep their plots producing year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the season and your goals. For fall hunting plots, brassicas like turnips and radishes combined with cereal grains draw deer hard once cold weather hits. For spring and summer, clover and chicory blends provide year-round nutrition and are easy to maintain. For a kill plot near a stand, a small brassica plot of a quarter acre or less can be incredibly effective. We design blends specific to your property's soil and your hunting strategy.
